Abstract

Deposits and occurrences of bauxites in Yugoslavia belong to two metallogenic provinces: Dinaric and Carpatho-Balkanides. They are concentrated in several bauxite areas: Montenegro, western Serbia. Metohija and eastern Serbia. The most important are deposits in Montenegro and Metohija, while those in western and eastern Serbia are less known because they were last discovered. Explotation of bauxites took place in some of the deposits in Montenegro and Metohija.

On basis of the known metallogeny of bauxites in the territory of Serbia five ore fields were separated, four of them in the Dinaric province (Poćuta, Tara, Mačkat, Grebnik), and one in the Carpatho-Balkanides (Babušnica). Cretaceous bauxites of western and eastern Serbia are of the boehmite type, while Grebnik bauxites are of the diaspora type. Bauxites are featured by high variability of chemical composition, from very high grade ones, containing over 60% Al2O3 and and to 2% SO2 to low graded ore forming transitional types toward clayey bauxites.
